My paintings are influenced by my strong interest in architecture and the highly individual characteristics that all buildings develop as people live their lives in and around them. This interest has grown over years of travel within Australia and overseas.
I am drawn to details, many of them transient, that bear evidence of a particular point in time or event or person. This is perhaps attributable in part to my past experiences as a forensic scientist. The rendering of objects such as street signs, graffiti and household articles seems to address a mild obsession with detail which is a consequence of those experiences.
Strong light and shadow are prominent features of much of my work. I like to accentuate the contrast between the two and to create ill-defined details in the shadows. I find that people tend to interpret those details in different ways, depending upon the personal thoughts or memories which are evoked by the painting as a whole.
My paintings start with a well developed drawing and are built up with numerous layers of paint, in some areas obscuring what is below and in others letting it bleed through to provide additional detail. I prefer to paint on board as it offers more resistance in those frequent instances when I feel compelled to apply a level of controlled violence to the brush.
